UUP welcome clarification on issues from NIO
Speaking after a meeting with senior Northern Ireland Office officials earlier today, Ulster Unionist Party leader, Doug Beattie MC MLA, welcomed the opportunity to seek clarification on a range of issues emanating from the Kings Speech earlier this week.
“Along with a delegation from my party, I met with senior NIO officials this morning to seek clarification on a number of matters around the Kings Speech to Parliament earlier this week.
“I welcome the level of engagement and response we received from those officials. We understand that, in many cases, the legislation discussed is still to be shaped but we were happy to place on record the areas on which we wanted the new Labour Government to pay particular focus.
“This included our continued position that the planned removal of the unacceptable legacy legislation, created by the previous Government, did not result in a return to the equally unacceptable Stormont House Agreement ‘solutions’.
“We also discussed the ongoing issues at Harland and Wolff and welcomed the commitment of the Government to honour MoD contracts with the shipyard.
“I look forward to continuing to build strong relationships between the Ulster Unionist Party and the new Government. Today was a positive indication that moderate unionist voices and concerns will be heard in an open and fair manner.”
