Ulster Unionist Party leadership meet with Secretary of State
Party Leader Jon Burrows MLA, joined by Deputy Leader Diana Armstrong MLA and Deputy Chief Whip John Stewart MLA, held an engaging and constructive meeting today with the Secretary of State, Hilary Benn. The discussion covered a broad range of key issues affecting Northern Ireland, including the looming funding cliff edge facing the Local Growth Fund, ongoing legacy matters, and the future of institutional reform.
Commenting after the meeting, Jon Burrows MLA said:
“Today’s meeting with the Secretary of State was a valuable opportunity to set out, clearly and directly, the priorities of the Ulster Unionist Party. As leader, I took the chance to emphasise that we are a committed partner for constructive work in the interests of Northern Ireland.
“My team and I pressed the Secretary of State on a number of challenges facing Northern Ireland. We held a candid discussion on the future of governance here, including our desire to enhance the efficiency of our devolved government and strengthen the capacity for the scrutiny of Ministers. However, we firmly stressed that this is a Strand One issue to be discussed and resolved by Northern Ireland’s political parties.”
“We made clear our serious concerns about the funding cliff edge facing the Local Growth Fund. The Ulster Unionist Party will continue to raise this issue at every level, both in the Assembly and at Westminster.
“I also underlined the need for a culture shift in the approach to legacy, particularly the importance of greater state responsibility in ensuring proper protection for our veterans and retired RUC officers.
“I look forward to further constructive engagement with the Secretary of State in the near future, and to continuing to advocate for all the people of Northern Ireland.”
