Ulster Unionist Party Comments On Safeguarding Issues Within The Presbyterian Church Of Ireland

Ulster Unionist Justice Spokesperson Doug Beattie MC MLA has commented on the safeguarding issues engulfing the Presbyterian Church of Ireland.

Doug Beattie MC MLA said,

“The safeguarding issues engulfing the Presbyterian Church of Ireland are compounded by their lack of transparency and sense of secrecy. This has led to rumour, speculation, and blame. The use of non-disclosure agreements (NDA) only adds to the feeling of cover-up and the coercion of vulnerable individuals.

“It must now be welcomed that the PSNI has decided to investigate the actions of the church. It must also be welcome that the church has said it will cooperate fully with the police investigation.

“It is important now, with a live investigation ongoing which may result in criminal charges, that the police are given time and space to conduct that investigation free from rumour and speculation. It is also important that any possible criminal charges are not compromised by divisive commentary on the case. This would be an abdication of our duty towards any victims and would only undermine any investigation.

“The Ulster Unionist Party is happy to lead on the wider discussion around improper use of NDAs that could lead to the cover-up of safeguarding or criminal actions by organisations including arms of government.”
