Ulster Unionist Party comments on Covid Inquiry Findings

The Ulster Unionist Party has responded to the Covid Inquiry’s second report and recommendations on the ‘Core decision-making and political governance’.

A Party spokesperson said,

“We first want to acknowledge the pain and loss experienced by all those who lost loved ones during the pandemic. Our thoughts remain with every family who suffered during this unprecedented time.

“The Ulster Unionist Party notes the findings of the second report into the pandemic. We will examine these in detail to ensure that lessons are learned and implemented.

“Our Minister at the time acted on the best scientific advice available. His guiding light at all times was keeping the public safe.

“We were deeply dismayed by the lack of seriousness shown by some Executive colleagues during this critical period, including persistent briefing against others and the leaking of confidential information. Such behaviour undermined collective responsibility and public confidence at a time when unity was essential.

“It is also significant that the Covid Inquiry has confirmed what we already knew: that the then Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill was wrong to attend Bobby Storey’s funeral. This decision seriously undermined public trust in the Executive’s messaging and compliance with restrictions. It is also clear that DUP colleagues were largely driven by political opportunism and sought to create division within the Executive rather than focus on the collective challenge.

“The Ulster Unionist Party is keen to learn from these findings and hopes that Northern Ireland is better prepared for any future public health emergency.”
