Teachers’ Pay Deal Welcome, But Workload and Budget Certainty Must Be Addressed

Ulster Unionist Education Spokesperson Jon Burrows MLA has welcomed the Northern Ireland Teachers’ Council (NITC) decision to accept the 4% pay offer, describing it as a fair and deserved outcome for teachers.

Ulster Unionist Education spokesperson Jon Burrows MLA said:

“This agreement is a fair and deserved outcome for teachers who have worked tirelessly under immense pressure. It is right that their contribution is recognised. Although, we cannot ignore the excessive workload pressures teachers face. Addressing these challenges must remain a priority.

“The current pattern of pay disputes, strike action, and delayed backdated settlements is simply unsustainable. Teachers deserve a more reliable and transparent process that gives them certainty.

“Agreement over a multi-year budget would certainly support this aim, provided it keeps pace with inflationary pressures. Stability and planning are key to ensuring fairness for teachers and continuity for pupils.”
