Rachel Reeves great summer giveaway needs careful study
Ulster Unionist Windsor Framework spokesperson Dr Steve Aiken OBE MLA has cautioned that the Chancellor's newly announced summer measures must be examined closely for their impact on Northern Ireland, warning that the speed of the announcement leaves key questions, particularly around the Windsor Framework, unanswered.
Dr Steve Aiken OBE MLA said:
"Yesterday's announcement by Rachel Reeves has been greeted favourably by those of us looking to entertain our children and grandchildren this summer. A reduction in VAT for children's activities and food is to be welcomed, and it is hoped the hospitality and entertainment sectors will pass on the savings accordingly.
"The other announcement, on essential food tariffs for over 100 items coming into GB, raises questions as to whether the Windsor Framework will allow similar savings here.
"Equally, we are already hearing concerns from retailers and farmers across the United Kingdom about the impact this will have. Some have said that larger reductions in energy costs and tackling the rising cost of fertiliser would be a better focus for the Chancellor's efforts.
"The haste with which these changes have been presented, however, would suggest that detailed analysis of the impacts has yet to be fully established. That, in these turbulent times, does raise concerns, in particular here in Northern Ireland, where we need early clarity on any potential Windsor Framework impacts.
"Bearing in mind the forthcoming parcel tax implementation in July, and the added costs of shipping, both of which are fully supported by faithful implementors like Alliance, this Chancellor's gift may end up costing us more."
