Progress Made But Vigilance Still Needed
Ulster Unionist Deputy Leader and Agriculture Spokesperson Robbie Butler MLA has welcomed DAERA’s announcement on easing some movement restrictions after the recent Bluetongue (BTV3) outbreak, while urging farmers to remain cautious and look out for clear daily updates from the Department.
Robbie Butler said,
“Farmers across Northern Ireland will be relieved to see some movement restored after a great deal of uncertainty and real pressure in recent days. The departments decision is a positive step, especially for those outside the Temporary Control Zones who can now trade again with GB, and for those able to bring animals into the TCZs under licence.
“But this is still a sensitive situation. Our weather has been all over the place, and sudden changes in temperature can affect midge activity even in what AFBI has confirmed as the vector low period. So we all need to keep cautious and take things steady.
“With lambing season fast approaching, clear, simple guidance on animal movements is absolutely vital. Farmers need confidence they’re getting the right advice at the right time, especially around movements on and off farms near the control zones.
“That’s why I’m calling on the department to provide straightforward, daily communication with the industry. Regular updates will help avoid confusion, support good decision-making on farms, and make sure we manage this outbreak in the safest and most sensible way possible.”
