Nesbitt calls on Irish Government to address legacy failings.

Speaking after his conversation with the Irish Tanaiste, Ulster Unionist Party leader, Mike Nesbitt MLA said.

“Today I spoke to the Tanaiste about legacy and made clear my requirement that the Government of Ireland step up to the mark. I also emphasised the need to reach political agreement on a definition of the term reconciliation, given some victims think it means being required to hug the person who murdered their loved one.

“Over the next several weeks, the Omagh Bomb inquiry will focus on victims’ stories where we will hear commemorative and personal statements from bereaved families of murdered victims, survivors, emergency services and those working in statutory organisations. However, whilst we would hope this inquiry will allow for all those impacted by the bombing to have an opportunity to have their story heard, it is coupled with the re-traumatisation to all those individuals who have had to live with the trauma of the bombing over the last twenty-seven years.

“Whilst the inquiry will be victim focused, it is essential that the Irish Government cooperate and fully disclose all information to help assist the inquiry for those families who lost loved ones and those who were survivors but victims of the bombing. Tanaiste Simon Harris assured me this would be the case.”
