Long-term viability plan for City of Derry Airport urgently needed - Armstrong

Ulster Unionist Party Economy Spokesperson, Diana Armstrong MLA has welcomed the announcement from the Department of Economy to assume operational costs of City of Derry Airport but urged the Minister to develop a clear and actionable plan that will ensure the long-term viability and success of City of Derry Airport.
Ms Armstrong said.
“I welcome the recent decision by the Department for the Economy to assume the annual running costs of City of Derry Airport. This move is a significant step towards alleviating the financial pressures on Derry City and Strabane District Council to value of £3 million per annum, allowing them to redirect much-needed funds into other vital local services, initiatives and pass on savings to ratepayers.
“The airport is a crucial asset for the North-West, providing essential connectivity and supporting regional economic growth. By taking on the operational costs, the Department for the Economy is demonstrating a commitment to the sustainability and future prosperity of the region.
“However, while this decision is a positive development, it is imperative that the Department for the Economy also focuses on establishing a robust business plan for the airport’s future. A comprehensive strategy is essential to maximise the airport’s potential, attract new routes, and enhance its role as a driver of economic development in the region.
“I urge the Department to engage with key stakeholders, including local businesses and community representatives, to develop a clear and actionable plan. This plan should outline steps to boost passenger numbers, improve facilities, and explore new opportunities for growth and investment.
“While I commend the Department for the Economy for their support, it is crucial that we now turn our attention to ensuring the long-term viability and success of City of Derry Airport through strategic planning and investment.”
Derry City and Strabane District Council Ulster Unionist Alderman, Darren Guy added.
“The decision on the City of Derry Airport will be one welcomed by many across the city and district as it may see a substantial reduction in ratepayer bills. For years substantial subvention went to support the airport, which divided many rate payers, and with that arrangement at an end, there’s a real opportunity to deliver some relief for ratepayers and also an opportunity to properly market and promote City of Derry Airport with a view to attracting new services and boosting passenger numbers."
