DUP Lagan Valley Candidate cannot ignore issues being raised – Beattie
Ulster Unionist Party leader, Doug Beattie MC MLA, commented.
“Over this last week I have been sent a social media clip, from angry military veterans, reportedly showing the DUP candidate for Lagan Valley telling His Majesty the King he was still serving in the Royal Irish Regiment. I cannot vouch for the veracity of the media clip, but I do know the DUP have been approached to address the issue.
“As we commemorate both our National Armed Forces Day and the approaching anniversary of the incredible sacrifices at ‘The Somme’ it is important the DUP address the concerns of these veterans.
“We have seen disputes recently between Conservative and Labour election candidates over their service records and a police chief being removed from post for exaggerating his military service. For veterans it is important that those who served are recognised for their service and that service is not exploited by those who have never served.
“Mr. Buckley is asking the people of Lagan Valley to trust him to be their Member of Parliament on Thursday, these questions are very relevant to every voter, not just those still serving, veterans and their families.
“To enter election day with no clear rebuttal of these issues must be a matter of concern, not just for Lagan Valley but for those planning on supporting the DUP across Northern Ireland.”
