Crawford welcomes announcement of School Uniform Bill

Ulster Unionist Party education spokesperson, Colin Crawford MLA, has welcomed the statement from the Education Minister that a School Uniform Bill will be brought forward.

Mr. Crawford said.

“I welcome the announcement from the Education Minister, Paul Givan, regarding the Executive’s agreement to advance the preparation of a School Uniforms Bill. This initiative represents a vital step forward in supporting families across Northern Ireland and ensuring that every child can access education without financial barriers.

“Only last week I brought forward a motion to the Assembly highlighting the impact soring uniforms costs and the equally important issue of ‘holiday hunger’ was having on many households across Northern Ireland.

“School uniforms should foster a sense of belonging and pride, not be a source of financial stress for parents. While many schools already demonstrate good practice, I share the Minister’s concern that uniform policies in some instances do not prioritise affordability. Families should never be deterred from choosing a school due to the costs associated with uniforms.

“The public consultation, which attracted an overwhelming response, highlights the importance of this issue to parents and the wider community. I commend the Minister’s commitment to addressing these concerns through primary legislation, coupled with strengthened statutory guidance.

“Once enacted, this legislation will ensure transparency and affordability are embedded at the heart of uniform policies while respecting the autonomy of schools to determine their uniform requirements.

“This is a positive step towards reducing financial pressures on families and promoting equal opportunities in education. I look forward to seeing the results of the consultation and the development of this important Bill.

“However, I would also challenge the Minister to outline his plans to address the equally important issue of addressing ‘holiday hunger’, no child should go hungry during school holidays and his department need to provide urgent solutions to help those most at risk.”
