Consistent standards needed to address divisive rhetoric - Butler

Robbie Butler MLA, Deputy Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, has called for consistent accountability in response to multiple provocative statements from the Belfast rap trio Kneecap.

“Kneecap’s brand is built on provocation and is widely seen by many as glorifying violence and stoking division, particularly among young audiences. While knee-jerk reactions may not help, we cannot dismiss this as mere artistic expression. There have rightly been concerns that some of their messaging has, for many, crossed the line into incitement or appeared to endorse violence against elected representatives.

“Expressing views on global issues like Gaza is not the issue; every child’s life, Palestinian or Israeli, holds equal value. However, selective outrage or rhetoric that endorses hatred, riots, or support for proscribed terrorist groups cannot be excused.

“It’s concerning that some politicians, journalists, and commentators defend such rhetoric while swiftly condemning other divisive acts, like the sectarian message on a bonfire mattress. Wrong is wrong, and consistency is crucial. Calls for ‘Brits out’ or glorification of violence deserve unequivocal rejection, just as other forms of hate do.

“This isn’t about stifling culture or dissent or reducing artistic expression; it’s about rejecting hate in all its forms, no matter the source. Without consistent standards, reconciliation remains out of reach, especially when some dismiss the need for it entirely.”
