Ulster Unionist Deputy Leader and Agriculture spokesperson Robbie Butler MLA has warned that the confirmation of 44 suspected Bluetongue cases is a severe blow to Northern Ireland’s farming community.
Robbie Butler said,
“The updated report by DAERA confirming the two previous cases as BTV-3 and a further 44 cattle impacted by suspected Blue Tongue infection will be a hammer blow for those affected and the wider farming community. This must be a wake-up call for vigilance.
“It is absolutely vital that the Department offer every help and resource to ensure that the affected area and farms are supported and informed without delay.
“Communication and adherence to bio security guidance will be paramount as we face into this additional challenge to the Farming sector.
“Farmers have been struggling with issues ranging from Avian Flu to the unaddressed Bovine TB crisis and the addition of Bluetongue infection to the growing list of concerns sadly could push some over the edge. I would urge any Farmer that is affected or concerned to reach out to Rural Support or other wellbeing support group to protect their own wellbeing.”
