Burrows: rule of law must apply without fear or favour
Ulster Unionist Party Leader Jon Burrows MLA has responded to today’s High Court judgment on the Drumcree parade ban.
Jon Burrows MLA said:
“Today’s judgment is clear that ‘the law does not apply only when you agree with it’. The court confirmed Portadown District had a legal right to parade, and that the protest was mounted ‘with the purpose and effect of thwarting’ that right. Upholding the ban does not legitimise that unlawful obstruction.
“Those in elected office have a particular duty to uphold the law, and undermining it is reprehensible. The court noted the ongoing criminal investigation. The PSNI and PPS must follow the evidence wherever it leads, without fear or favour.
“We will keep pressing for reform so that anyone who breaches the obligations of their office can be excluded from office through a fair, independent process, rather than one their own party can block.
“We also want substantial on-the-spot ‘super fines’ for breaches of parades legislation, backed by prosecutions for anyone who refuses a lawful police direction to leave an unlawful protest. Those who break these laws must face swift and tough justice.”
