Beattie welcomes NI inclusion in ground-breaking smoking and vaping legislation

Ulster Unionist Party Leader Doug Beattie MC MLA has welcomed the announcement by Health Minister, Robin Swann, confirming that Northern Ireland will be included in Westminster's Tobacco and Vapes bill. The proposed legislation aims to combat youth smoking and vaping, making it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009.

Expressing his support for the legislation, the Ulster Unionist Leader emphasised the urgent need to address the devastating impact of smoking. Smoking claims the lives of over 2,000 people annually in Northern Ireland and costs hospitals over £200 million yearly.

“I want to thank Health Minister Robin Swann for ensuring that Northern Ireland is included in this legislation. It is a testament to his commitment to the well-being of our citizens, particularly our young people. The Ulster Unionist Party has a clear record of promoting measures that protect our communities from the harmful effects of smoking and vaping. Following the restoration of the Executive early last month, we moved immediately to try to secure Northern Ireland's inclusion in this transformative piece of legislation.

“We would encourage all members of the Northern Ireland Assembly to support this crucial initiative as it goes before the Assembly for final approval. Once approved, Northern Ireland will be included in the UK Government bill bringing us in line with England and Wales.”
