Armstrong Welcomes Rate relief Statement
Ulster Unionist Party Economy Spokesperson, Diana Armstrong MLA, has welcomed the strategic roadmap for rating policy as outlined by the Minister of Finance to the Assembly. Ms Armstrong has particularly welcomed the focus on small business rate relief and the non-domestic vacant rating (NDVR) as these areas are crucial for the economic vitality of our region.
Ms Armstrong said.
“I welcome the Minister’s commitment to conducting a comprehensive review of the Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) scheme in 2025/26. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and it is essential that the SBRR scheme is tailored to address the current economic challenges they face, especially following the Autumn budget. I want this review to ensure that the relief is effectively targeted and supports the growth and sustainability of small enterprises across Northern Ireland. This is what the business community wants, and it is imperative that it is delivered.
“Something I particularly recognise as a major issue, is long-term derelict properties. It’s encouraging to see a proposal to address the matter of vacant commercial properties through potential increases in liability and exploring support options for redevelopment, including energy efficiency measures. Vacant properties not only represent lost economic opportunities but a blight on our streets. By incentivising the redevelopment and productive use of these properties, we can stimulate local economies, create jobs, and enhance the vibrancy of our communities”.
