Allen welcomes positive news for Harland and Wolff

Ulster Unionist Party MLA for East Belfast, Andy Allen MBE, has welcomed the announcement from the UK Government securing the future of Harland and Wolff shipyard and its workforce.

Mr Allen said:

“When news of the Harland and Wolff situation broke, in September this year, I said: ‘It wasn’t that long ago that I stood on the picket lines with the dedicated workforce of Harland and Wolff, who were deeply concerned for their future, the future of their families, and the future of shipbuilding in Northern Ireland. Today, these same workers find themselves facing that same uncertainty. While this outcome may have seemed increasingly likely in recent months, we must find a solution that not only keeps this historic shipyard in East Belfast but allows it to grow and thrive.”

“My colleagues and I have pressed tirelessly, both at home and at Westminster, to ensure every possible support is provided to the yard and its resilient workforce. I am therefore delighted to welcome today’s announcement, which offers hope for the future.

“As I have said before, Harland and Wolff is more than just a historic landmark. It has a vital role to play in our national defence, particularly in shipbuilding and maintenance. The skills and expertise of the Harland and Wolff workforce are invaluable to the shipyard and a crucial asset to the wider economy and our defence capabilities, and we must do all we can to support them.”
