Allen welcomes opening of new Harland & Wolff fabrication hall

East Belfast Ulster Unionist MLA Andy Allen MBE has welcomed the opening of the new Resurgent Hall at Harland & Wolff, describing it as an important milestone for the future of shipbuilding in Belfast.

Andy Allen said:

“This is a good day for East Belfast and a real vote of confidence in the future of Harland & Wolff, particularly given the challenges and uncertainty the yard and its workforce have faced in the recent past.

“Shipbuilding is part of the fabric of East Belfast. Generations of local families have worked in the yard, and it is encouraging to see that proud heritage being built upon, with major investment in modern facilities and the skills needed for the years ahead.

“With around £100 million being invested in Belfast and over 900 skilled jobs and apprenticeships being supported, this is a great opportunity for local people, particularly young people who want to learn a trade and build a rewarding career close to home.

“The construction of three new support ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary also shows the vital role Northern Ireland plays in the defence and security of the United Kingdom.

“This investment strengthens Belfast’s ability to deliver the work already secured and puts Harland & Wolff in a stronger position to compete for new contracts, attract further investment and sustain skilled jobs for generations to come.

“The Ulster Unionist Party wants to see local workers, apprentices and businesses across East Belfast benefiting directly from this investment, and we will continue to press for more work to come to the yard.”
