Allen meets with the Utility Regulator to discuss rising energy costs

East Belfast Ulster Unionist Party MLA and Communities Spokesperson, Andy Allen MBE, met with the Utility Regulator John French on Monday to discuss the ongoing cost of energy crisis.

Mr Allen said:

“Over the past 12 months we have heard announcement after announcement from energy companies on the need to increase energy tariffs due to the increase in global wholesale costs. These increases have seen the average yearly cost of energy rise significantly, resulting in households having to ration their energy usage.

“Across Northern Ireland we have tens of thousands struggling with the almost daily increases in the cost of living which is having a detrimental impact on them and their families. They deserve a functioning Executive that can deliver a safety net to help them through the worst of these soaring increases.

“Any measures taken must focus on the short and medium to long term – this should include a review of the powers currently available to the regulator, investment in energy efficiency measures, and the immediate establishment of a fuel poverty taskforce.

“It is deplorable, given the significant need, that the devolved institutions continue to be in a state of paralysis, however, that should not prevent engagement on the Programme for Government – therefore, I would encourage all parties to support our call to commence discussions on a Programme for Government immediately.

“Furthermore, Westminster must urgently set out how they intend to ensure that Northern Ireland residents will benefit from the £400 energy bills support scheme.

“Energy companies also have a duty to do all they can to support customers. Therefore, I would call on them to step forward and provide meaningful support.”
