A fair settlement on teaching pay must be arrived at – Butler

UUP Education spokesperson, Robbie Butler MLA said:

“When Covid hit Northern Ireland in early 2020 all our lives were turned upside down. Some of those worst affected were our children. School closures, remote learning and new ways had to be developed for educating and assessment. Our teachers stepped up, found new ways to teach effectively and didn’t duck the challenges.

“As both a politician and parent I became acutely aware of the value and importance of the multi-faceted roles a modern teacher has to perform. Public opinion is united in admiration and awareness of just how much the role of a teacher has evolved.

“Fast forward to 2023 and teachers like many of our other public service front line staff see themselves with pay which hasn’t kept up with inflation.  This is compounded by the cost of living crisis.

“If we truly value our teachers, then it is absolutely essential they are paid fairly.  Strike action is the last thing teachers want to do, so it is imperative that a fair settlement is arrived at to avert further disruption for children, families and teachers. A solution must be found.”
