Royal Mail's 'no' to all-Ireland postal tariff sensible option

07/01/2009

Danny KennedyUlster Unionist Deputy Leader Danny Kennedy MLA, has welcomed Royal Mail's decision not to introduce an all-Island postal tariff suggesting that it would provide no added benefit to customers in Northern Ireland and could in fact mean an increase in costs for local posters.

In a statement Mr. Kennedy said:

"This decision has been made by Royal Mail in the interests of local customers and should therefore be commended. Royal Mail has illustrated that the difference in postage costs between Royal Mail and the Irish Republic's provider, An Post, could potentially penalise local customers - So Royal Mail's decision today is very welcome".

"Across Northern Ireland people are facing daily financial pressures and Declan O'Loan and the SDLP should not be asking any business to increase customers' costs to reconcile their own narrow party political goals".
