The Ulster Unionist Party candidate in the forthcoming Enniskillen by-election, Basil Johnston, has reaffirmed his commitment not to put up any posters around the town or the surrounding area in the build up to the election next week. Basil's decision not to use posters was made known in public letters issued following his selection to contest the seat on behalf of the UUP, with many people commenting that they believed it to be a good idea.
Basil said: "Right from the outset of my campaign, I made it clear that I wouldn't be putting up posters around Enniskillen or the other villages in the council area such as Lisbellaw and Tempo.
"I felt that rather than plaster my name across the area on posters it would be better to have a focused doorstep approach, supported by adverts in the local press highlighting the issues that I believe are important. I know that many people across the county agree with my method and indeed some have mentioned to me on the doorsteps that they are delighted that I have not put up posters in and around their homes.
"I called on the other parties to support my idea of having a no poster campaign, but unfortunately it looks like the DUP/Sinn Fein 'Unholy Alliance' feel it is necessary to blight the local communities with eyesores that we all must endure for the duration of the election."
