UUP delegation meet Goggins

27/07/2009

Basil McCreaSpeaking following a meeting between Mr. Paul Goggins and a UUP delegation led by Sir Reg Empey, Ulster Unionist MLA for Lagan Valley and Policing Board member Basil McCrea has pressed Mr. Goggins for a positive announcement on the long-running issue of a pension / gratuity payment for former RUC members of the part-time reserve.

Mr. McCrea said, "It is time for this matter to be resolved. The service that was given by members of the part-time reserve of the RUC must be recognised by Government. These people not only gave of their time, outside of their jobs and time with their families, but did so in the midst of a bloody terrorist campaign. They were prepared to put their lives in danger to protect people from being murdered by terrorists and to maintain law and order in the towns and villages of Northern Ireland.

"It is clear that being a member of the part-time reserve was not like any other part-time employment. Resolving this issue would provide a small measure of justice and of recognition to the brave men and women of the RUC Reserve. I will be continuing to campaign the Government to positively resolve to ensure that the men and women of the part-time reserve are recognised for their service."
