Ulster Unionist Party Assembly group statement

Following detailed consideration the UUP Assembly group has concluded that as things stand they are unable to support the devolution of Policing and Justice at this time.

Over the last three years we have set out our concerns on matters which we believe must be addressed to achieve the appropriate political climate for Policing and Justice powers to be devolved to the Northern Ireland Assembly. These concerns have included addressing the dysfunctional nature of the current Executive and key issues including Education and parading, about which a large section of the community have real and genuine concerns.

Sir Reg Empey said: "At the outset of this process we pointed out that no negotiations should take place under duress and that they should be inclusive. Regrettably these conditions were not met.

The Ulster Unionist Party has tabled proposals to improve the workings of the Executive (see attached document) and a range of other matters.

It remains our view that the current Executive must be capable of exercising its existing powers before such an important issue as Policing and Justice is devolved.

It has always been clear that the leader of the DUP has the necessary votes at his disposal within his own assembly group to carry through the deal which he and his party have negotiated with Sinn Fein.

Over the coming days we will continue to monitor progress on matters contained within our document. The Ulster Unionist Party remains committed to devolution and to providing strong, stable and effective government for all the people of Northern Ireland."

'Our Party Executive will meet on Monday to hear a report from the Leader and take a final decision.
