Ulster Unionist MLA for Lagan Valley and Northern Ireland Policing Board member Basil McCrea has commented on the release of more police officers from desk duties.
Welcoming the release Basil said, "The Ulster Unionist Party always welcomes having more officers on the beat. Indeed, I have been told that it could amount to as many as 800 officers."
"This is part of the Chief Constable's plan to replace the Full Time Reserve. The logistical and human resource challenges should not be underestimated however. These desk-bound officers will have to go through a five-week training period to prepare them for work back out on the street.
"However, this is not yet a done deal. This whole strategy is dependent upon finance. These officers can only be released if they are replaced by civilians. This is going to cost in the region of £8 million.
There will be a huge financial challenge for Matt Baggott given that the PSNI faces efficiency cuts of up to £17 million.
"I hope that the promises made by the Prime Minister to fully support the Chief Constable if the security situation demands it are to be honoured because on the face of it a shortfall exists which could prevent the Chief Constable from implementing these welcome proposals."
