Speaking in advance of the launch of body-worn video equipment for police officers operating in Lisburn, Ulster Unionist MLA for Lagan Valley and Northern Ireland Policing Board member Basil McCrea has spoken out in support of the introduction of 'body-cams'.
Mr. McCrea said, "I am delighted that police officers in Lisburn will be able to use this innovative and forward-thinking technology. The 'body-cams' will be used to gather evidence at scenes of violence and disorder. I have no doubt that the high-quality evidence 'body-cams' provide will have particular benefits in domestic abuse incidents, where the retention of early evidence is critical to best support the victim.
"I also believe that 'body-cams' will also deter and prevent anti-social behaviour as individuals will know that their behaviour is being recorded. The 'body-cam' will allow police officers to collect high-quality video evidence that can be used to support cases. Hopefully, the visual recording of evidence and the clear identification of offenders should encourage offenders to admit their offences. This will no doubt see a corresponding reduction in the length of court cases.
"The use of the 'body-cam' will also have benefits for the community as the 'body-cam' should reduce police bureaucracy as police officers will be able to refer directly to video footage. This means that officers will be able to spend more time patrolling local neighbourhoods. Their use should also demonstrate openness and accountability for both training and oversight purposes. Furthermore, I would imagine that we would also see a reduction in the number of unfounded allegations against police officers. This factor should also be of benefit to police officers operating on single-patrol - a practice the PSNI is trying to drive forward.
"The 'body-cam' is a valuable, additional device in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour. I believe their use will ensure that those who are guilty of crime and antisocial behaviour do not escape the consequences. The 'body-cam' is one way I believe we can make our communities safer and justice speedier."
