Jeffrey uses flawed logic to cover DUP embarrassment

20/11/2009

Danny KennedyDanny Kennedy, Ulster Unionist deputy Leader has accused the DUP of looking weak as they tried to wriggle out of the fact that their actions on the 42 day Detention vote helped prop up a desperate Gordon Brown, the result of which guaranteed that there would be no referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.
In a statement Mr. Kennedy said:
"Jeffrey Donaldson has unsuccessfully tried to wriggle out of the fact that the DUP propped up the Labour Government in June 2008. His flawed logic suggests that because Governments have survived defeats in the past, the Labour Government would have survived a defeat on the provisions of the Terrorism Act. What he fails to recognise is the utterly helpless position that Gordon Brown found himself in in June of Last year. As he floundered from one crisis to another it was the DUP who gave him a steadying hand.
All Jeffrey has succeeded in doing is to remind us all of those regrettable scenes in the House of Commons as Iris Robinson held up her 9 fingered salute to show exactly what the ramifications of the DUP's actions were.
The public recognises that it was the Labour Government who broke their promise for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty and despite Jeffrey's desperate plea, they also know who kept them in power long enough to ensure that we now have a more centralised and powerful European Union at the expense of Westminster.
I suggest that the DUP keep Mr. Donaldson quiet for a period in order to stop him from unecessarily drawing anymore attention to DUP mistakes.
