The Ulster Unionist Assembly member for Newry & Armagh has condemned the latest attack on a financial building in his constituency following the overnight discovery that Bessbrook Credit Union has been burgled and the safe removed by criminals. Mr Kennedy said he unreservedly condemned the attack, which follows on from the weekend attempted theft of an ATM machine between the villages of Bessbrook and Camlough.
Mr Kennedy said there was increasing concern within the financial sector and small local businesses at the upsurge in criminal activity throughout his constituency. In addition to this he said many elderly people were feeling particularly vulnerable at this time. He called for the community to unite and become "the eyes and ears" of their local area and fully assist the PSNI in their attempts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Mr Kennedy confirmed that Bessbrook Credit Union are currently in temporary premises in the Mill Road area of the village whilst their main property in Main Street Bessbrook is being re-furbished. He said the entire community would share his shock and disgust at this latest incident.
