30 years of achievement in Ballycastle

28/07/2010

Ulster Unionist Employment and Learning Minister Sir Reg Empey has praised the achievements of BCW Training in its 30 years of helping people in the Ballycastle area towards employment.

Speaking during a visit to Moyle District Council and some local employers, Sir Reg said: "Organisations such as BCW Training demonstrate the importance of local enterprises in delivering training in a variety of occupational skills. They have worked with other training centres and Further Education Colleges to provide Vocational Qualifications which can transform peoples' lives, both in terms of their career prospects and their own personal development. In the seven months since BCW Training became involved in the Steps to Work programme they have helped over a third of their leavers into employment.

"My visit here today has not only enabled me to hear the views of the local council, but has also afforded me the opportunity to visit BCW Training, Quick Tag and Moyle Greenlight Gateway to see the excellent work being carried out by their skilled and dedicated employees. It is clear that both the council and employers recognise that enhanced investment in skills and innovation will secure a more prosperous future for our people, for our businesses and for our economy."

The Minister went on to stress the importance of the business community in leading the recovery of Northern Ireland's economy: "The business community provides the vital work placements and employment opportunities that are critical to stimulating economic growth and future prosperity. My Department is committed to helping businesses and individuals so that they may benefit from the upturn in the economic climate when it occurs.

"My Department is keen to listen to businesses and local councils, and to take on board their views in relation to our economic recovery. Being here to meet with you today provides me with the opportunity to do this and affords me the opportunity to remind you that my Department is here to help."
