Sammy adopts UUP policy

05/07/2010

Ulster Unionist MLA David McNarry has welcomed the news that Finance Minister Sammy Wilson is adopting some Ulster Unionist policy to deal with the current economic fiscal problems.

Commenting as the issue David said; "Better late than never sums up my welcome of Sammy Wilsons response to the potential of some Westminster departments having to consider up to 40% cuts in their operating budgets."

"No later than June 21st in my pre-budget statement I warned about the perils of inaction by the Northern Ireland Executive in getting real over managing their budgets. No department can escape painful reductions in their capacity to spend. Not even those more deserving than others in laying claim to ring fencing."

"The failure of the Executive is as a direct result of its dysfunctionality - an impediment to it operating as a unit rather than a selection of outlets. I have said repeatedly that the Executive must act collectively as a corporate body. Now, but only now is Sammy Wilson saying the same - better late that never!"

"So why the delay in preparing for the tough decisions which need to be taken? There will be no delays or deferments come the 20th October when the scale of the pressures to reduce spending becomes realities."

"Sammy talks a good talk and he criticises fellow Ministers but he can do more than media sound-bites. He can surely bring the Executive together and end the two party DUP/SF fiscal and policy control freakary."

"He must tell them and if he fails to succeed - tell the people -that he has, or has not got into a position - a corporate style Executive willing and able to pull together and pull us through these difficult times."
