Ulster Unionist Policing Board member Basil McCrea MLA has said the PSNI will have to look at alternative strategies following the announcement that the PSNI will have to stop using 'stop and search' powers following the recent European Court ruling.
Commenting on the issue Basil said; "PSNI officers will now have to rely on other legislation which allows them to search those they have a reasonable suspicion are involved in illegal activity."
"I do believe robust anti-terrorism measures are vital, especially in light of the severity of the current security situation. Just look at the recent bomb attacks on Palace Barracks, Newry Courthouse, Gilnahirk, the Policing Board, Aughnacloy and the horrendous and callous attack on Constable Heffron - that is not including the many other devices which have been found across the Province. These incidents highlight the capabilities of dissident republicans.
"Therefore I am quite convinced that the PSNI will come back with alternative strategies that will protect all of the citizens of Northern Ireland. While the UUP would have been supportive of the use of 'stop and search' powers we recognise the European ruling and understand that the PSNI must comply with the rule of law. I look forward to seeing what measures and plans they will introduce to help thwart the actions of dissident terrorists."
