Ulster Unionist Party MLA for Lagan Valley and Policing Board member Basil McCrea has welcomed the introduction by the Public Prosecution Service of a victim's policy which will explain to victims of crimes and their families why their case does not proceed to court.
Mr. McCrea welcoming the introduction said, "I am delighted that the PPS has been receptive and has listened to the concerns of victims and their elected representatives. In recent months, I have lobbied organisations within the criminal justice system on behalf of constituents to improve the treatment of victims. Unfortunately, I have been increasingly disappointed by how I continue to see the criminal justice system treat and displace victims of crime. The difficulties and trauma that many victims experience seem at times to be underestimated.
"This is why I am delighted to see such a practical outcome. This is one tangible way in which the PPS can be more open and accountable to the community it serves. I look forward to seeing how this policy works in practice and will be watching closely to ensure that we have a Public Prosecution Service which actively serves the people of Northern Ireland when they are at their most vulnerable."
