NI has a 'long way to go' on disability issues

Danny KennedyUlster Unionist Party deputy leader Danny Kennedy, chair of the Assembly Committee for the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, addressed Saturday's event organised by Disability Action in Belfast's Ramda Encore Hotel.

Speaking in his capacity as Ulster Unionist Party deputy leader, the Newry and Armagh MLA said he was "proud of the UUP's record of promoting the rights of those with disabilities and of actively improving people's ability to fully participate in society".

"I believe that Northern Ireland has come a long way in a short time when it comes to facilitating and supporting people with disabilities, but we still have a significant distance to go. However, I am confident that by working together we will get there."

Highlighting the efforts of the Ulster Unionist Party's two ministers - Employment and Learning Minister Sir Reg Empey, and Health Minister Michael McGimpsey - to support those with disabilities, Mr Kennedy noted the introduction of a Disability Action Plan, Bamford Action Plan, the Disability Action Service and the Pathways to Work programme.

Tackling the issue of proposals for a Northern Ireland Bill of Rights, Mr Kennedy was unequivocal: "A lay observer listening to the recent debates about the need for a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland may come to the conclusion that the Ulster Unionist Party is opposed to a rights agenda. This would be a mistake. Although we have serious reservations about the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission's proposals put forward to the Secretary of State, we strongly support fundamental rights and liberties and recognise the duties that everyone possesses to their society and each other.

"Whilst there is a definite need to ensure that those with different requirements are supported in our society, the Ulster Unionist Party is a firm believer that actions speak louder than words," the Newry and Armagh MLA said.

"I am confident that our record shows that we are fully committed to taking the necessary action to ensure that people with disabilities are fully supported and given every opportunity to succeed in our society. Fostering social inclusion and breaking down barriers takes committed action as well as legal protection."
