The Ulster Unionist Party has welcomed the announcement that the INLA has disposed of its weapons, describing it as "the next step along Northern Ireland's long road to peace".
Speaking after the move was announced at a press conference in Belfast, North Belfast UUP MLA Fred Cobain said that it was "not before time".
"I hope that the republican community's commitment to peace, as indicated by today's announcement, is borne out by future deeds.
"The conflict that marred our past cannot be allowed to characterise our future. We must continue to take bold strides towards normalisation.
"I am pleased that, despite ongoing dissident activity, the INLA has committed to this path. Today offers further confirmation that the community will is to leave the days of violence and instability behind.
"A future without fear, without sectarianism and without guns is the very least the people of Northern Ireland deserve."
