Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party Sir Reg Empey has paid tribute to Mark Durkan who stepped down as Leader of the SDLP this week describing him as a dedicated and hard working Leader.
"I have worked alongside Mark for many years and he is one of the most hardworking politicians I know - I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to him on a personal capacity and also recognise the important work he has done to secure power sharing in Northern Ireland. While other parties refused to move forward, Mark and his predecessors have taken huge steps towards peace."
Although our political ideologies may differ greatly- Mark was always prepared to put the people of Northern Ireland first in all of his engagements with ourselves. I admit that we had our own fair share of differences in the First Assembly however in hindsight it was a much better working relationship and alternative to what we currently have today."
"I would also like to congratulate Margaret on her new role and wish her all the best in her post. As a talented and efficient politician I know she will be a valuable asset to the Party in her capacity as Leader."
