Consumers have right to scrutinise electricity bills

13/11/2009

Robin SwannUlster Unionist consumer affairs spokesperson Robin Swann has affirmed that business owners have every right to ask tough questions about billing, particularly during a difficult economic time.

"I welcome the Utility Regulator's inquiry in response to concerns raised by business customers about recent, unexpected rises in their electricity bills. If businesses are being hit with larger than expected bills, they have a right to subject providers to scrutiny.

"Business owners must be vigilant and ensure that every penny is accounted for and, where possible, saved. Transparency and accountability are essential if consumers are to have faith in their provider and indeed if they are to be able to financially plan.

"I commend the Consumer Council for their efforts in this area, and would urge anyone who would like more information as to their rights as a consumer, and the options available, to visit www.consumercouncil.org.uk"
