Allistair and Sammy- Who works whom?

18/12/2009

Roy BeggsUlster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs Jnr has ridiculed the performance of fellow East Antrim MLA Allistair Ross on the Stormont Environment Committee which has just published a major report on Climate Change.
"In my remarks on the Environment Committee's Climate Change Report in the Assembly I highlighted the contribution of the one person who appeared in front of the Committee in our Climate Change enquiry who supported the views of former Environment Minister Sammy Wilson. I suggested that Hans Schreuder's evidence might not be the most credible. http://www.niassembly.gov.uk/environment/2007mandate/minutes%20of%20evidence/2008/090521.htm

In his contribution Mr Schreuder actually denied the existence of the 'Greenhouse effect' and went on to say that the world was not running out of crude oil, even that it was not a fossil fuel or a form of hydrocarbon. I was amazed that later in the debate, Mr Ross approvingly referenced Mr Schreuder without highlighting the more ridiculous views he expressed. It is clear that Mr Ross is also a climate change denier. No wonder his own party colleague Jim Wells MLA publically chided him later in the debate and said that "He just doesn't get it!"

In May 2005 Sammy Wilson MP signed the Westminster Early Day motion EDM 178 which called 'Climate Change a threat to civilization" and sought annual cuts in carbon dioxide emissions of 3 per cent. Did Alastair Ross influence Sammy Wilson's U-turn or is he simply continuing to express the views of his former boss? What can explain Sammy's conversion from a climate change alarmist who signed House of Commons motions in 2005 to Sammy the climate change denying Environment Minister of 2008/9?
