Continued unrest having economic impact

02/03/2010

George SavageThe Ulster Unionist Party has criticised those responsible for another bomb alert in Craigavon saying that the continued dissident activity is having a negative impact on the local economy.

Commenting as the police investigate another alert UUP MLA George Savage said; "This is the fifth incident in seven days - something which is leaving the people of Craigavon frustrated and rightly angry. The message from the community today is simply this: we have had enough."

"Streets are cordoned off, shops are closed and many local businesses are feeling the impact while the police strive to control the situation. We need solidarity for our police on the ground and send out the constant message that we need to move forward. We are in times of economic pressure and these incidents are causing a nuisance and stress to local business owners."

"The determined actions of a minority group however will not serve to deter our community and we need to stand firm stressing that those responsible have no place in society. The people of Northern Ireland deserve better - and those who are responsible need to recognise that no brick, no bullet or no bomb will succeed in tearing down a peace process we have worked tirelessly to achieve."
