Welsh Assembly's proposed badger cull supported

19/01/2010

Billy ArmstrongMid-Ulster MLA Billy Armstrong has commented on the news that the Welsh Government is to implement a pilot Badger cull.

The Ulster Unionist representative said;

"I fully support this decision by the Welsh Executive. I have consistently supported the use of targeted culling of badgers as a means of eradicating bovine tb.

Diseased badgers must be removed from the countryside as a means of protecting both wildlife and livestock, and it is quite clear that the current policy isn't working and is costing the Exchequer a fortune. In England alone last year £84 million was spent destroying 40,000 cattle.

The Welsh are to be applauded for the steps they have taken, and I will be calling upon the Northern Ireland Agriculture Minister to follow suit and take the lead shown by her Welsh colleagues."
