Colin Breen Chairman of North Down Ulster Unionist Association has appealed for vigilance following a spate of thefts from war memorials throughout the UK.
Mr Breen said;
"The despicable theft of plaques listing the names of the fallen so they can be sold off as scrap metal is disgusting. The people who commit these crimes only live in a free society because of the sacrifice made by the brave souls listed thereon. The desecration of these memorials will be condemned by all right thinking people across the land.
I appeal to everyone, if they see anything suspicious in the vicinity of a memorial to inform the police immediately. Scrap dealers too have a part to play; it is obvious that any such plaque being presented to them is stolen. They should report it or face prosecution themselves.
Remembrance Day approaches let us remember those who fought and died with pride. Lest we forget."
