Jim Nicholson

Jim was first elected to public office in 1976 as a member or Armagh Council and served as Mayor in 1996. In 1983 he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Newry andArmagh, before resigning in 1986 over the Anglo-Irish Agreement. He has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1989, making him the longest serving MEP currently in the Parliament.

 Between 2007-2009 Jim was appointed Quaestor for the European Parliament – a highly prestigious role to look after the financial and administrative interests of the Parliament.

 Jim now sits with the European Conservatives and Reformists Group; the fourth largest group in the European Parliament. His rural background means that he has a keen interest in Agriculture and is currently the Agriculture Co-ordinator for the Group. He is also a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and a substitute member for the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, Committee on Regional Development and the Delegation for relations with the Korean Peninsula.

 Jim is also vice-chair of the Delegation to the African,Caribbeanand Pacific-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. Through this appointment he has built up a very keen interest in international development as a result of this and as such, has made recent visits to both Haiti and Uganda.

 In late 2010 Jim was appointed Rapporteur, or Chief Representative for the Dairy Industry. This significant appointment will gives Jim a lot of influence on the debate about the future of the dairy sector in Europe.
